River Mersey Canoe Trail
Posted
16th October 2006
Brookbank Canoes provided canoe guides for the official launch of the River Mersey Canoe Trail on the 16th October 2006.
Senior representatives from Natural England, Environment Agency, Stockport Council and the British Canoe Union met at the start of the route on Ford Street in Stockport Town Centre and paddled the first few kilometres to an egress at Burnage Rugby Club for the official launch.
Through a Natural England research project "Dedicating Land for Public Access" and partnership with the Environment Agency and other national stakeholders this has resulted in a dedication to water along 28km of the River Mersey.
Further information with regards to access can be obtained from Brookbank Canoes 0161 474 1499, Chris Cleaver the British Canoe Union Regional Officer 01625 878 838, the access pages of www.bcu.org.uk/northwest and "on route" from the static information boards. A PDF version of the route map can be downloaded from the Manchester Canoe Club site through the link CANOE TRAIL MAP
Mark Burch director of Brookbank Canoes commented that this is a great opportunity for everybody involved and shows what can be achieved with regards to the right of access to inland waters and is looking forward to paddling the rest of the trail and hopefully in time the rest of the Mersey.
